DEBKAfile: A third US carrier, the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise Strike Group is speeding towards the Persian Gulf

According to DEBKAfiles military sources, the US naval build-up off the shores of Iran marks rising military tensions in the region, accentuated by last weeks Hamas victory which has endowed Iran with a military foothold on Israels southwestern border.

The USS Enterprise CVN 65-Big E Strike Group will join the USS Stennis and the USS Nimitz carriers, building up the largest sea, air, marine concentration the United States has ever deployed opposite Iran. This goes towards making good on the assurances of four carriers US Vice President Dick Cheney offered the Gulf and Middle East nations during his May tour of the region.

The Big E leads a strike group consisting of the guided-missile destroyers USS Arleigh Burke DDG 51, USS Stout DDG 55, Forrest Sherman DDG 98 and USS James E. Williams DDG 95, as well as the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg CG 64, the SS Philadelphia SSN 690 nuclear submarine and the USNS Supply T-AOE 6>
On its decks are the Carrier Air Wing CVW 1, whose pilots fought combat missions in the Gulf and Arabian Sea during 2006. The Air Wing is made up of F/Q-18 Super Hornet strike craft, the Sidewinders Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-86, the 251st Marine Fighter Attack Squadron MFA, and the Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ 137.

The 32nd Sea Control Squadron VS consists of S-3B Vikings. The Airborne Early Warning Squadron VAQ 3 flies E-2C Hawkeye craft. The Fleet Logistics Support Squadron VRC is based on C-2A Greyhounds.

DEBKAfiles military sources report Washington is considering deploying the fourth US carrier for the region in the Red Sea opposite Saudi Arabian western coast to secure the three US carriers in the Gulf from the rear as well as the Gulf of Aqaba and Suez Canal.

US, Israel finalise Iran strike plan

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visited Washington yesterday and met with US President George W. Bush to finalise plans for a joint US-Israel strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

President Bush hinted that actions against Iran will form the core of their discussion.

"I'm sure that we will find some time, also, to discuss other measures, such as the danger of Iran and the threats that come from the President of Iran, who talks time and again about the liquidation of the state of Israel, something that is totally intolerable and unacceptable," he said. "And we have to continue the measures taken in order to stop the Iranian efforts to establish unconventional weapons."

Talking to reporters at a joint press conference Bush once again re-iterated his position on military strikes against Iran by saying "I will tell you this, that my position hasn't changed, and that is all options are on the table."

"And I fully understand the concerns of any Israeli when they hear the voice of the man in Iran saying, on the one hand, we want to acquire the technologies and know-how to build a -- enrich uranium, which could then be converted into a nuclear weapon, and on the other hand, we want to destroy Israel," he added. "Look, if I were an Israeli citizen I would view that as a serious threat to my security. And as a strong ally of Israel, I view that as a serious threat to its security -- not only the security of Israel, but the security of the Middle East."

Olmert also met with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to obtain their broad support for military action against Iran.

Pelosi's comments welcoming the Prime Minister indicate that he is likely to get the backing he is seeking from the Congress.

With the Republican and Democratic leaders gathered here, you see how strong the bipartisanship is for a great U.S.-Israel relationship," Pelosi said.

Meanwhile, Iran has formally complained to the United Nations about the planned strike by US and Israel.

"I wish to inform you that, emboldened by the absence of any action by the Security Council, various Israeli officials have unabatedly continued to publicly and contemptuously make unlawful and dangerous threats of resorting to force against the Islamic Republic of Iran," Iran's UN ambassador Javad Zarif wrote in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, dated June 11.

Iran has also accused the US of carrying out covert operations aimed at destabilising the country.

je laisse à votre lecture attentive l'analyse de Mc Govern, ancien de la CIA, sur la probabilité extrèmement forte de l'attaque américaine contre l'iran et les gardiens de la révolution , passés depuis quelques jours sous la définition "légale" américaine de groupe terroriste (c'est la première fois qu'une armée nationale est qualifiée par ce terme)
le départ de karl rowe de la maison blanche est analysé comme le succès de cheney, ouvertement favorable au conflit avec l'iran
le départ annoncé du porte parole de la maison blanche (tony snow) est aussi à mettre sur le compte de la probabilité d'une attaque qu'il ne souhaitait pas relayer
démocrate ou républicain, celà n'importe plus (c'est mon opinion) l'amérique cherche de manière compulsive à restaurer un leadership mondial qui lui échappe chaque mois un peu plus, sur tous les plans....que la crise du sub prime arrive maintenant n'est peut être pas complètement du au hasard...

Dick Cheney aurait envisagé un raid israélien sur l'Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Le vice-président des Etats-Unis, Dick Cheney, aurait envisagé de demander à Israël de lancer des missiles contre le site nucléaire iranien de Natanz pour provoquer des représailles de Téhéran et obtenir ainsi un prétexte pour que l'armée américaine frappe à son tour, écrit dimanche l'hebdomadaire Newsweek.

L'article, qui paraît alors que le mystère reste entier sur un raid aérien mené au début du mois par Israël sur le territoire syrien, s'appuie sur deux sources non identifiées.

Selon Newsweek, l'ancien conseiller de Cheney aux questions moyen-orientales, David Wurmser, aurait confié il y a plusieurs mois en petit comité que Cheney examinait la possibilité de demander aux Israéliens de frapper Natanz.

Une riposte militaire de l'Iran aurait donné à Washington un prétexte pour lancer à son tour des frappes aériennes, écrit Newsweek.

Son épouse, Meyrav Wurmser, chercheuse à l'Hudson Institute, un centre de réflexion néoconservateur, affirme dans les colonnes de Newsweek que ces affirmations sont fausses.

Wurmser a quitté pour sa part la vice-présidence le mois dernier.

Toujours selon Newsweek, Israël jugerait qu'une action militaire pourrait être nécessaire dès 2008 pour entraver les programmes de recherche nucléaire de l'Iran qui, d'après la communauté du renseignement, devrait attendre plusieurs années avant de maîtriser le feu nucléaire.

D'après des sources diplomatiques citées dans les médias, le raid israélien du 6 septembre contre la Syrie, qui a été confirmé de sources occidentales, pourrait avoir visé une installation nucléaire. Les autorités israéliennes observent un embargo total sur toute information liée à ce raid.

Décidément, c'est dans l'air du temps...
